Are You Able to Crack This? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Shaped the Modern World
There are numerous contenders for the designation as “planet’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, however, that honor should go to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working for 90 days,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical saw, that converted logs to boards with almost no manual labor, the Dutch could build ships faster compared to any other nation, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, financial as well as cultural dominance in Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s first authentic factory machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part converted its rotary motion to vertical motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Every component was simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to combine them so the machine acted in a precisely synchronized order, cutting with each downward motion while moving on every upward motion. It was an astonishingly intelligent use of fundamental components.”
