Arteta Hails a More Dependable Squad and Acknowledges Kai Havertz Injury Blow.
Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his side can continue to cope with fitness issues after confirming that forward Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
The Germany international has been out for months following knee surgery. Hoped to be available sooner, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is much more reliable and has more options,” stated the manager.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This news leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also available following a lengthy absence.
Fitness Doubts Linger
Additional concerns involve defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. Therefore, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in the backline for the league leaders.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a more robust situation to deal with such setbacks.
Squad Depth Key to Title Challenge
Questioned if more options was helping their league challenge, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he noted.
“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at this level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Havertz
Addressing the setback previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave further detail. “He was doing everything. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”
The manager conveyed his keenness to have him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, in my view, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his personality, his personality. I observe his frustration being outside.”
“His playing record is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to get him back involved and playing because I feel it’s going to be a massive boost.”
