Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Links as '100%' Rumour
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent reports connecting him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in June 2024, is under contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extension option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions Following Recent Remarks
Maresca's latest comments come in the wake of he described a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had fueled widespread talk of a possible rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club next season and urged the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter in the open, there has also been no apology offered, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The mood during these media briefings has become notably awkward, raising fears it could impact what has up to now been a promising start to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have qualified for the League Cup last four, and can achieve a better Champions League draw with good performances in their remaining games.
