Environmental Protection Agency Urged to Halt Application of Antimicrobial Drugs on American Agricultural Produce Amidst Resistance Fears

A fresh legal petition from twelve public health and farm worker organizations is urging the US environmental regulator to cease allowing the use of antibiotics on produce across the United States, pointing to antibiotic-resistant proliferation and illnesses to agricultural workers.

Farming Industry Applies Substantial Amounts of Antibiotic Pesticides

The agricultural sector uses around 8 million pounds of antimicrobial and fungicidal chemicals on American food crops annually, with several of these agents banned in foreign countries.

“Every year US citizens are at elevated risk from dangerous microbes and diseases because human medicines are sprayed on crops,” commented Nathan Donley.

Antibiotic Resistance Presents Serious Public Health Dangers

The overuse of antimicrobial drugs, which are vital for combating infections, as pesticides on fruits and vegetables jeopardizes public health because it can result in superbug bacteria. Similarly, excessive application of antifungal agent pesticides can create fungal diseases that are more resistant with currently available medicines.

  • Treatment-resistant illnesses sicken about 2.8m individuals and cause about 35,000 deaths annually.
  • Public health organizations have linked “clinically significant antibiotics” permitted for pesticide use to antibiotic resistance, increased risk of bacterial illnesses and higher probability of MRSA.

Ecological and Health Impacts

Furthermore, eating chemical remnants on food can disturb the intestinal flora and elevate the risk of chronic diseases. These substances also pollute water sources, and are considered to affect pollinators. Frequently economically disadvantaged and Latino farm workers are most at risk.

Common Agricultural Antimicrobials and Agricultural Practices

Agricultural operations apply antimicrobials because they destroy bacteria that can harm or kill crops. Among the popular antibiotic pesticides is streptomycin, which is often used in healthcare. Estimates indicate up to significant quantities have been applied on US crops in a single year.

Agricultural Sector Influence and Regulatory Action

The petition coincides with the EPA faces demands to widen the use of medical antimicrobials. The citrus plant illness, transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid, is devastating orange groves in Florida.

“I appreciate their urgent need because they’re in difficult circumstances, but from a societal point of view this is certainly a no-brainer – it cannot happen,” the advocate commented. “The bottom line is the enormous issues caused by using pharmaceuticals on food crops significantly surpass the farming challenges.”

Other Solutions and Long-term Outlook

Specialists suggest straightforward agricultural steps that should be tried first, such as increasing plant spacing, cultivating more robust varieties of plants and locating infected plants and quickly removing them to stop the infections from spreading.

The petition provides the EPA about half a decade to answer. Several years ago, the organization outlawed chloropyrifos in response to a comparable regulatory appeal, but a legal authority overturned the regulatory action.

The regulator can implement a ban, or is required to give a reason why it won’t. If the regulator, or a subsequent government, declines to take action, then the coalitions can sue. The procedure could last over ten years.

“We are engaged in the long game,” Donley concluded.
