The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
