"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

Historic Nod

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

Yet the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"We have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
