Heat and Trail Blazers Claim First Wins Following Player Arrests
Miami put up eighty-six first-half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Grizzlies in their first basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected unlawful gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping federal investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.
But, the Heat were focused as they scored eighty-six first-half points to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later said Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
Silver also mentioned an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
