Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
