Vladimir Putin has vowed to quickly retaliate against what he termed the “growing militarization of Europe”, while brushing off Western apprehensions that Moscow plans to attack Nato as “absurdity”.

Putin’s Sochi Speech

Speaking at length in the Russian city of Sochi on the recent Thursday, Putin stated: “We are carefully watching the growing military expansion of Europe … We simply cannot ignore what is happening. We have no right to do so for reasons of our own security.”

“It is clear to all that our responsive actions will not be long in coming,” he remarked, addressing the Valdai plenary session, a yearly conference of government figures and international analysts where the president often presents his opinions on international issues.

Leaders’ Gathering Amid Increased Strain

These comments came as numerous EU officials gathered in Copenhagen for a summit aimed at strengthening assistance for Ukraine and speeding up military initiatives intended to ensure the continent is able to prevent Russian aggression.

The summit followed turbulent weeks in which multiple nations in Europe reported unauthorized flights by Russian aircraft, raising fears that Moscow was probing the alliance’s determination.

Putin’s Diplomatic Gesture Toward Trump

While threatening Europe, Putin adopted a friendly tone toward the former US president, even after negative statements from the American side about him.

As part of an effort to court the US leader, he spoke glowingly of him, claiming that “under Trump’s leadership, the war in Ukraine could have been prevented” – a point Trump has often used himself in official remarks.

The Kremlin and Kyiv have spent months trying to court Trump over the ongoing hostilities, as Trump has frequently changed his position.

Lately, Kyiv appeared to come out ahead, with Trump expressing disappointment in Putin for prolonging the fighting and labeling the Russian armed forces and financial system as a “paper tiger”.

Change in American Stance

Based on information, Trump recently authorised American spy services and the defense department to help Kyiv carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory – a move which would amount to a notable adjustment in American strategy under his leadership.

The Ukrainian president has also advocated American authorities for advanced US-made weapons and other high-precision equipment capable of engaging locations up to 800 kilometers away.

Putin’s Response to Remarks

Similar to earlier instances when challenged by the US leader, he brushed it off, hoping for the US leader to reverse his position.

He described Trump as a “agreeable discussant” who knows “when to pay attention” and said Russia was seeking a “complete renewal” of diplomatic links with Washington, commending Trump’s administration for its “directness and lack of hypocrisy”.

Responding to Trump’s critical description, Putin implied the statement might have been tongue-in-cheek, saying: “If Moscow can confront Nato and still be labeled inferior, what does that make the bloc?”

War in Gaza

The Russian leader also supported the US initiative to resolve the Gaza conflict, saying that ex-British leader Tony Blair – likely to have a major part in the initiative – could “make a positive contribution”.

He then digressed to reminisce about how he once spent the night at Blair’s home and the two had a hot drink the next morning “dressed casually”.

Critical Remarks on European Leadership

The rhetoric was distinctly more critical when it came to Europe, with his primary frustration directed at the region, accusing “European elites” for hindering a settlement in Ukraine and “creating panic” in the continent.

He declared: “It turns out that war with the Russians is practically on the doorstep. They repeat this nonsense, this mantra, over and over again … They can’t believe what they’re saying, that Russia is going to attack Nato? They’re either incredibly incompetent if they truly believe it, because it’s impossible to believe this nonsense, or they’re simply dishonest.”

Ship Seizure

The president also criticized the seizure by France this week of the sailors on a tanker linked to Moscow which was suspected of serving as a launchpad for drone flights that caused disruptions in Denmark last week.

He asserted: “The tanker was seized without any grounds in neutral waters. This is piracy.”

Ukraine Conflict

Regarding the Ukraine conflict, there was no evidence that the Russian leader was seeking a negotiated settlement or scaling back his ultimate objective of achieving Ukraine’s defeat.

Although Moscow has made limited advances, he maintained that his troops were “moving forward successfully” along the entire front.

He also asserted that the Ukrainian side was suffering significantly more damage than Moscow – despite the fact that assessments from the West put Russia’s toll at close to a million, exceeding Ukraine’s.

“Given Ukraine’s losses, the Ukrainian leadership should carefully consider starting discussions,” the president said.

Ukrainian Leader’s Call

Attending heads of state in the summit, the Ukrainian president said Moscow was “stepping up its destructive actions” and appealed to EU nations to show the “determination” to act without delay.

He said: “We see clearly that only joint action and united efforts can guarantee real security. No country should be left alone against this threat.” He called on Europe to “increase the pressure, and increase the pressure now, so that Russia is forced to end the war and change its policy”.
