The Former Congresswoman Makes History as First Female Governor

Throughout many decades, Virginia has seen seventy-four state executives, all of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger shattered this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the first female governor in Virginia's history.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Concerns and Strategic Opposition

The former US representative and CIA operative succeeded with a campaign that highlighted everyday expenses and carefully targeted Trump-era measures rather than the person.

Beginnings and Education

Hailing from in the Garden State on a summer day in 1979, she relocated to a Virginia community at thirteen. Her dad was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She attended the University of Virginia, obtaining a diploma in literary arts. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a substitute teacher before pursuing a career in public service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she shared with followers at a event in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Government Roles

At the Postal Service, she investigated involving narcotics, child predators and money launderers. She served search and arrest warrants, often being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on anti-terror efforts, working covertly and internationally.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the Pacific coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They pulled out a world map and inquired of their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “family and friends lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to pivot from a path of service to country, to local engagement because she was correct. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in Virginia, she participated in a grassroots group, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had secured the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was doing with his actions and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my representative over and over again oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to step up. So spoiler: I succeeded.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she quickly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate Democrats. She prioritized less visible matters: bringing internet access to the countryside, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a reputation for collaborating with opposing parties and was often cited as the most bipartisan representative of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she felt alienated centrists, cautioning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be weaponised in tight races.

Centrist Group

Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was labeled a member of the “centrist alliance” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Run for Governor

In late 2023, she declared she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would rather campaign for Virginia's leadership in 2025.

Her platform centred on ideas of public service, advocacy for education and public works and defense of governing systems. Her federal service gave her authority on defense issues and she spoke of government work as a vocation instead of a job.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to withstand Republican opponent her challenger's attacks on social topics, notably the assertion that Spanberger is an radical on civil rights and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

The governor-elect, who maintained that communities should decide whether trans youth can participate in school athletics, portrayed her rival as the contender more out of step with the center of the commonwealth's citizens.
