The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Smog After Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Several parts of the capital showed an air quality index over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than safe levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that covers the capital as winter sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected city government approached the judicial authority to request a easing of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific hours throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating dangerous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities each year in the capital.
