The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
