The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Squad
The English team has chosen a 12-man squad just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five past matches.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
