Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
According to international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.
He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.
After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
